While most photos we post of crinoids (aka sea lilies or feather stars) show these animals firmly attached to a surface, did you know that many crinoids can in fact SWIM? Whoa. This footage was captured during the tenth dive of the Hohonu Moana: Exploring Deep Waters off Hawai’i expedition, on August 11, 2015, on a ridge that extends to the southeast of Salmon Bank in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. | NOAA Ocean Exploration

An absolutely stunning, museum-grade slab of crinoids from far-eastern Quebec. I managed to get this piece unprepared from an old collection. Total prep time was 22 hours and was worth the effort. Two species are present, Dimercrinites and a likely Cybelecrinus. I’ll have this piece on display at my booth at the London gem & mineral show on the 21st-23rd of November. Yes- I made a custom case for it, I like building stuff when I’m not prepping, performing or digging. #crinoid #trilobite #fossil

Ancient Jimbacrinus crinoid fossils, 280 million years old, found whole in Western Australia providing a rare glimpse into the Permian period. Discovered in 1949 by cattle station manager J. Bostock, the Jimbacrinus crinoid fossils of Western Australia are approximately 280 million years old, dating to the Permian period. Found in the Gascoyne Junction region, their exceptional preservation is attributed to rapid burial in the ancient sedimentary conditions of the Cundlego Formation. Formally de

Found a star in a rock ⭐️ Cross-section of a crinoid stem, an ancient ocean animal related to sea stars (starfish) These creatures lived on the seafloor hundreds of millions of years ago, and their stems sometimes fossilize into perfect little stars like this one. Crinoids and starfish are like cousins: Starfish crawl around the ocean floor Crinoids were usually attached to the bottom by a stem and waved their arms in the water to catch food.

'The BBC has had the fossil identified by the British Geological Survey (BGS) which confirmed it is a larger part of a crinoid. Crinoids are marine animals that first appeared in the Cambrian period, more than 500 million years ago, making it one of the oldest complex animals on the planet, and versions of it still exist today. It has a flexible stem, which is attached to the sea floor, with branching arms arranged around the main body of the animal at the top of the stem - although it is an ani
