In this Heggerty lesson we focused on building strong phonemic awareness by practicing first letter names and sounds, using Elkonin boxes, and isolating initial sounds in words. Using Elkonin boxes helps students segment words, and become more confident in identifying where sounds occur. Focusing on first sounds strengthens listening skills and gives students what they need to write beginning letters and eventually stretch and spell full words.
