I have decided on not using metal slides but have not decided on the exact wood-on-wood design I want to use. I have built drawer boxes multiple ways using rabbets, pocket holes, and even dowels, but I have found that this way is the easiest and gets the job done. A butt joint with glue and trim screws. Plenty strong enough, looks just fine for shop furniture, and it’s easy to figure out the dimensions of my front and back pieces.
